Cosmetologists trained at Cinta Aveda Institute are taught the ABC’s of how to convert someone’s worn out hairstyle to a fresh, updated do. We know how to set a perimeter and add interior layers as a secondary move. We go from dropping our combs to making confident artistic calls on someone’s style.
As a super senior here at Cinta Aveda, I’m here to tell those of you newly embarking on this journey that it gets better. It’s human nature to not want to disappoint a fellow human. When they sit in your chair and leave their appearance in your hands, it can be the most nerve-wracking thing. But it can also be the coolest thing.
I won’t lie—there will be that occasional guest who is so particular it discourages you from working on them. I’m here to tell you to take it with a grain of salt and go through with it. It’ll just make every other guest seem that much more enjoyable.
I’ll also discourage you from being quick to decide what you like and what you don’t like. A self-fulfilling prophecy can subconsciously manipulate your thoughts. This is a huge mistake I made early on. I thought I hated color. I swore I liked cuts and only cuts. I would check the appointment books first thing in the morning so that I could brace myself if I had a guest for a color service later that day.
I talked to cosmetology professionals who gave me the best advice, changing my frame of mind about color services. They told me to stop thinking so much about your own dislike and focus your energy instead on the outcome of the service. Don’t count how many foils you have left to fold but instead think about how each pattern in each packet will interact with the next. Focus on how you can change up the weaves and patterns of the foils to create a different outcome for your last guest. Finally, remember that you’re in school. It’s a learning environment and, even if you make a mistake, hair grows and color can be manipulated. Realizing all this made every day at school more enjoyable.
After you graduate, you will most likely seek out an assisting/education program. You’ll get to touch hair, but the chances are that you won’t be doing up to five services a day like you do when you’re at school. So enjoy yourself at Cinta Aveda. Take each guest on as a new learning experience. Don’t focus too much on the negative things; rather focus on what will make you into a better cosmetologist.
